On the morning of Saturday, September 19th, more than 50 Preferred Materials employees, friends and family members gathered at Lovers Key State Park in Fort Myers Beach, Florida to participate in the 30th Annual International Coastal Cleanup in Lee County. The volunteers walked up and down the coastline of Southwest Florida, picking up trash, litter and debris.
The clean-up effort was organized through the local group, Keep Lee County Beautiful, with two goals in mind: 1) to remove unsightly and environmentally harmful debris from Florida’s coastlines and 2) to raise awareness about this preventable litter problem. In 2014, the International Coastal Cleanup resulted in nearly 2,000 total volunteers and collection of more than 8,500 pounds of trash. The Coastal Cleanup is the only cleanup effort where trash is collected and recorded onto provided data cards that are then sent to the Ocean Conservancy (the organizer of the annual cleanup). The information is used in the development of new environmental protection acts and to change the behaviors that cause marine debris in the first place.
