On April 18, 2015, the employees of Preferred Materials, Inc. participated in the Palm Harbor Spring Fling 5K for Elisa’s Greatest Wishes Foundation, hosted by Nelson Construction. Employees, friends and family members from the Preferred Materials Asphalt division in Tampa, Florida came out to partake in this event. There were over 500 participants and the race alone raised more than $50,000. Proceeds from the Spring Fling went to purchase books for school libraries, funding scholarships and providing financial support to Girl Scouts, youth athletics, animal charities, and organizations that help sick children.

The foundation was created to honor the memory and wishes of 10-year-old Elisa Nelson who was abducted while on her way to school and murdered by a sexual predator who was out on parole. However, the April event was part of an effort to turn over a new leaf and celebrate the memory of Elisa’s life; remembering her for the dynamic, loving, generous and talented person she was.
