Preferred’s asphalt plant in Melbourne, FL, re-opened for business in June 2016; a full month ahead of schedule. Located in Central Brevard County, the plant had been idle since 2011. Nat Fisher, President of Preferred Materials Asphalt stated, “This plant closed due to deteriorating market conditions and it’s exciting that the market conditions have improved enough to support re-starting it.” And, the timing of the re-open couldn’t be better as a multitude of FDOT projects have just been set and Preferred Materials was just awarded the FDOT-US 1 project directly in front of the plant. Additionally, three other projects were recently bid and Preferred has designs on producing asphalt on those FDOT projects as well.
Many upgrades to the facility were made, including a new slat chain and liner rebuild, pressure cleaning of existing AC tanks, re-lining of cold feed bins, replacement of numerous motors, new hot oil system and plumbed jacketed oil lines. Additionally, the QC lab has been remodeled and relocated closer to the plant. Vehicle/pedestrian segregation plans have also been developed and implemented.
A new crew has been assembled and is eager to represent Preferred Materials on Florida’s Space Coast!
