In September, the entire state of Florida was preparing for a direct hit from Category 5 Hurricane Irma; the strongest storm on record to exist in the open Atlantic region, reaching wind speeds of 185 mph. While most Floridians were preparing their own homes and stocking up on supplies for their families, Governor Rick Scott activated the Florida Air and Army National Guard prior to the storm making landfall. Silvio, an active duty National Guardsman, reported for duty and spent nearly two weeks in a Tactical Operations Center in Orlando. As one of 7,000 soldiers and airmen serving the State, Silvio worked with emergency response agencies to equip shelters, house incoming soldiers, assess damages after the storm and execute orders for emergency response missions throughout the state. For many of the good people at Preferred, serving others doesn’t stop when they clock out at the end of their shift.
